History

  • Five consecutive defeats going back a number of years
  • Several close elections in the past
  • Spent $.36 per vote in November 2008 levy defeat

 

What Was Different?

  • SOS strategy was implemented
  • Spent $2.56 per vote in May 2009
  • Massive door-to-door effort led by the school superintendent
  • Parent leaders with marketing backgrounds key to the campaign
  • Phoned voters using the Activate phone system
  • No newspaper ads
  • Significant employee involvement
  • Mayor and church leaders were public supporters

 

Key Learning

  • Held meeting with employees who live within the school district and talked about the importance of the levy.  The local mayor participated.  The employees served as ambassadors in the community support the levy
  • Church leaders adopted the following theme “Strong schools equal strong churches.”  The leadership of the clergy served as an outside voice in support of the levy.
  • Volunteers were willing to canvass door-to-door.  Newspaper ads were not used so that the funds could be used for Direct Voter Contact.
